Going Solar in Saxony Estates – The Quick Read

This post is very specific to my neighborhood community and applicability to others will be limited.

We recently put solar panels on our rooftop, and this post will share with my neighbors what I’ve learned in the process.

How Much Does It Cost?

Our out-of-pocket will be $16K for a 7.2kW system + $3K to replace our home’s original Zinsco electrical panel. The total out-of-pocket is reduced by a rebate from Ameren ($250 per kW through December 31, 2023) and a 30% federal tax credit.

The tax credit was recently extended, but it is not refundable, so make sure you have sufficient tax liability to take advantage of it.

Financing is available and convenient with lenders that specialize in solar loans and use the panels as the collateral.

How Much Does It Save?

This year, I expect to save about $1K on electricity costs with money back from Ameren during some winter months, and a significantly reduced bill in the summer. Overall energy savings could be more as we move more towards electric vehicles and as costs of energy rise over the years.

How Long Will They Last?

Time will tell, but they are warrantied for 25 years and expected to last beyond that.

How Long Did It Take?

It took about 5 months from the time I started the process until the time we switched the system on. Most of that is spent waiting for plans and permits.

What Local Rules And Restrictions Are There?

Saxony Estates has nothing in our indentures related to solar panels. The City of Manchester likewise has nothing specifically related to rooftop solar panels.

How Do I Get Solar Panels On My Roof?

If you are interested, please let me know, and I can put you in contact with the salesperson at the company I used. I am very pleased with them end-to-end, you will get an extra $500 off your installation with the referral, and I also will get a referral bonus.
